Wang Xianchen resigned from the imperial censorate in 1509, bought a derelict temple plot in Suzhou, and spent sixteen years digging a garden that is one-fifth water. Its name, Zhuozheng Yuan, borrows a line about the humble business of tending vegetables — a retired official's joke about political failure.

The canal grid around it was laid in 514 BCE and still governs the street plan of Gusu District. What matters now is standing: eight classical gardens in this city entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997, and at 52,000 square metres this is the largest, ranked beside Beijing's Summer Palace among China's four great gardens. Its distance from the Huangpu River — roughly one hundred kilometres, and under half an hour from Shanghai Hongqiao by high-speed rail — is why the Suzhou day trip from Shanghai exists as a fixed genre rather than an improvisation. The design withholds. Fifty-two thousand square metres divide into eastern, central and western sections, each screened from the next so that nothing is seen whole. The Hall of Distant Fragrance faces a lotus pond named for the scent that crosses it in summer. The Small Flying Rainbow, vermilion and roofed, is the only covered bridge in Suzhou's classical gardens. The fan-shaped With Whom Shall I Sit Pavilion frames one view through one opening, and the Listening to the Rain Pavilion was sited for the sound of water on banana leaves. Latticed windows, whitewashed walls and eroded Taihu limestone carry the ornament that statuary carries elsewhere. From the central pond the sightline lifts north to the Beisi Pagoda, a kilometre beyond the wall and never owned — jiejing, borrowed scenery, the oldest trick in the Suzhou repertoire.
The block around it keeps accumulating. I. M. Pei's Suzhou Museum opened next door in 2006, its grey granite lines set deliberately against the garden wall. Lion Grove Garden and its Taihu rockery maze stand four hundred metres south; Pingjiang Road runs beside a canal that feeds the Grand Canal, the artery that made this a silk and merchant capital long before the railway.
